Does Ozempic work for weight loss? A doctor's perspective

By Dr. Andrea Pérez Jaramillo · Physician & nutritionist · Medically informed
Quick answer: Ozempic (semaglutide) can help you eat less in selected cases and under medical supervision, but it doesn't replace changing habits: without them, regaining weight after stopping is common.

Ozempic and similar medications are everywhere. As a physician, I want to give you an honest take: what they are, who they may make sense for, and why they're not a magic fix.

What is semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy)?

Semaglutide is a medication in the GLP-1 agonist family. It acts on hunger and fullness signals: it helps you feel fuller and eat less. It was originally developed for type 2 diabetes, and some versions were also approved for managing obesity. It's a prescription medication, not a supplement.

Who might it make sense for?

It can be a useful tool for people with obesity or certain metabolic conditions, always under medical guidance and follow-up. It's not for shedding "a few extra pounds" without proper assessment, and it's not for everyone. The decision should be individual, weighing your history, your risks and your goals.

What they don't tell you: it doesn't replace your habits

The medication can help you eat less, but it doesn't teach you to eat better. If habits, diet composition and muscle aren't addressed, it's common to regain the weight when you stop. So when it's used, it's best paired with a nutrition plan: enough protein, real foods and physical activity to protect muscle.

If you're going to use it, 4 things can't be missing

Risks and why it needs supervision

It can have side effects (digestive ones, among others) and isn't appropriate in every situation. Self-medicating or obtaining it outside medical supervision is risky. My role as a physician and nutritionist is to help you decide wisely and, if it's used, that it's used well and safely.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ozempic safe for anyone who wants to lose weight?

No. It's a prescription medication with indications, risks and side effects. It must be assessed and prescribed by a healthcare professional based on your case.

Do you regain the weight after stopping?

It's common to regain weight after stopping if habits weren't addressed. That's why it's key to pair it with sustainable changes in nutrition and physical activity.

Can I lose weight without medication?

Many people do, with a realistic nutrition plan and support. The medication is a tool for selected cases, not the only path.
